SANTA BARBARA MARITIME MUSEUM

PADDLE OUT FOR SBMM June 11 1-4

Santa Barbara Maritime Museum at Santa Barbara Harbor

Other organizations hold their annual fundraisers in a sedate, formal fashion, but the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) wanted to celebrate their coast, the environment, and their maritime history and traditions in a way that allowed more people to participate...Now that school is almost over and it's officially summer, being in, on, and under the water of our beautiful area moves front and center...and offer the perfect opportunity for everyone, young and old, to join in the celebration and assist the museum in offering its varied educational programs:
Join the fun on Saturday, June 11, from 1-4pm on Leadbetter Beach for the Second Annual  "Paddle Out for SBMM" to officially launch the season!
Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

Originally suggested by surfing legend Shaun Tomson as a Covid-safe celebration and fundraiser, the first Paddle Out, which was held in June 2021, was a rousing success with everyone concluding it should be done again... so this year we are doing it again and have even more fun planned! Attendees--paddlers and watchers will be able to enjoy delicious food from Romanti-Ezer, hear surf music provided by the Wrinkled Teenagers, and have the opportunity to join in beach games and crafts. Once The multi-generational event will again be launched by our Honorary Chair, surf legend Shaun Tomson, as he leads all of the paddlers into the water.

Paddle Out for SBMM helps us fund SBMM’s exhibits and experiential education programs--in the harbor, at the museum, and in schools around the county, many at no cost to students and schools–all of which encourage the protection and preservation of our fragile, limited natural resources for generations to come. The community's support underwrites SBMM’s work to educate and connect the community with the past, present, and future of the Channel and is greatly appreciated. For details visit www.sbmm.org.

CONDOR EXPRESS FUN

Report: Mini Mola’s, a mega pod, and humpbacks too

Tiny "dinner plate" sized ocean sunfish, Mola mola, in the Santa Barbara Channel.

2022 05-23 SB Channel

Captain Devin and the crew found extremely flat, calm seas all day in the Channel. Skies had a marine stratus layer until around 130pm. There was no wind. Sightings were great, including 3 ocean sunfish (Mola mola), 7 humpback whales and 1500 long-beaked common dolphins.

A few miles out from Santa Barbara we found 3 adorable ocean sunfish (Mola mola). They were all around 8 inches in diameter, which I jokingly call “dinner plate Mola’s.” Fortunately, no one else does! Great looks were had by all.

The Condor Express ran across the entire Santa Barbara Channel to Santa Cruz Island, then turned west and across the Santa Cruz Channel. All 7 whales were located here, a single, a pair, another single then another pair, and a final single whale. None of the whales were feeding, nor were there any behaviors other than they were moving about and came together as a group without any fanfare. No apparent feeding was going on as far as we could tell and they were all tending towards a westerly movement pattern.

About half way home a mega pod of dolphins located the Condor Express. They were moving east at a fairly rapid speed. Then, as often happens, some kind of “switch” was turned and the entire mega pod went into stampede mode. The boat followed and watched the spectacle for over 10 minute and at speeds in excess of 15 knots. This was NatGeo stuff!

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
