ANTIGUA YACHT CLUB MARINA & RESORT

A Tranquil Respite from the World

by Bonnie Carroll

The Antigua Yacht Club Marina & Resort has been home to sailors coming into their harbor for years. The Chinese inspired rooms and suites are the perfect place to relax after a long day of sailing or to just be surrounded by ocean lovers. Single rooms or suites with three bedrooms are available at the resort, and the hotel staff is very helpful, but never intrusive. There is also a lovely spa, where a full menu of services is offered to guests, including a variety of massage therapies.

A favorite dining and gathering spot is the Sea Breeze Restaurant, located on the pier, across the street from AYC Marina & Resort. The owners are quite charming. One, a young woman from Italy, who made me wish I was in Rome. They serve breakfast and lunch, but all Italian inspired, and Gelato as well. Needless to say, the coffee was outstanding and included cappuccino, latte, espresso or just a big cup of plain old java. A favorite breakfast here is the cheese, ham and tomato sandwich, which some of our group enjoyed very much.

This is a very relaxing spot to sit and watch the boats and the birds moving around the harbor, while enjoying a delicious home-made yogurt with your croissant and beverage. The AYC does have its own restaurant, but unfortunately it was under construction during my visit, and is scheduled to reopen in October or November. However, several locals told me it has a great menu, and offers a wonderful view of the harbor. Regattas are huge in this part of the world, and Antigua attracts the best of sailors to participate each year.

The AYC also has a bevy of shops where boating equipment, clothing, and gifts can be purchased. I was told the place is teeming with sailors and tourists in season. The season here is November through July, and the boats go back to Newport or home ports during hurricane season. I must say that I enjoyed the quiet with only a few boats in the harbor. I am sure during high season it is a mad scene in this popular venue. The AYC is conveniently located walking distance to a bevy of local shops, banks and restaurants. There is talk that this harbor may become a free port, which would be very advantageous for the shop owners and the tourists who visit here.
