PATRICIA STARR CROWNED MS. SENIOR CALIFORNIA
Heading to the National Pageant in Las Vegas Next Month

Santa Barbara is home to the newly crowned Ms. Senior California of America – Patricia Starr. And as far as we know – she is the first Ms. Senior California to come from Santa Barbara. She’s been making headlines since her cross-country bicycle ride two years ago at age 67, raising money for SBCC music scholarships.

At 69 years young, Starr prevailed over a bench of 15 talented and beautiful participants from all over California at the pageant held in Westminster last month (9.15.06). A classically trained pianist, Patricia wowed the judges with her rendition of Chopin’s familiar “Polonaise in A Flat.” Starr’s husband, Gabriel, designed and built a seven-foot turntable stage platform on which Starr and the piano were centered. As it turned, she could be seen playing from all angles and gave her performance an added zing.

Starr is currently completing her book “Angel On My Handlebars,” about the cross-country trek. Starr was awarded first place in the autobiography division at the Santa Barbara Writer’s Conference (in June 2006) for the book. In addition to all of these activities, Starr is also a member of the Prime Time Band playing trombone and piano. She entertains with the “Sizzling Seniors,” a non-profit entertainment group composed of former Ms. Senior America contestants. They perform in Las Vegas, Laughlin, and numerous venues all over Southern California. They also bring free shows to seniors. Starr is a music teacher and performer with no thought of retiring. This woman is constantly on the go, redefining the perception of age at every turn. She is quite an inspiration to all, to never give up.

The Ms Senior America pageant will be held on November 9, 10 & 11 with 48 states competing at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. Ms Senior America is a non–profit organization that began thirty-four years ago and is aimed at women between the ages of 60 and 90+ to compete for this vital title. By the way, there is no bathing suit competition.
